Luca Di Beo (born 14 May 1995) is an Italian-Brazilian mathematician, physicist and YouTuber, best known for videos on innovative simplified explanations in the fields of pure and applied mathematics (physics).
Background and Education
Luca Di Beo was born in São Paulo, Brazil, on 14 May 1995. He received a bachelors in physics in 2019 from the University of São Paulo.
In 2022, he completed a masters in pure mathematics awarded by Kyiv University, with his thesis titled “A Topological Approach to the Study of Morse-Smale Systems in the Boy’s Surface”. During his Master’s, Luca published a paper with his supervisor Alexandr Olegovich Prishlyak on “Flows with minimal number of singularities in the Boy’s surface”. Luca also took part in the conference Shevchenkivska Vesna (2022), where he presented his paper “Morse Smale Flows in the Boy’s Surface”.
Luca started a PhD at the University of Udine, located in Northern Italy in pure mathematics. He was invited to attend the International Doctoral Summer School in Conformal Geometry and Non-Local Operators (2023) in Spain, but chose to instead terminate his PhD, and focus on helping others to learn mathematics and theoretical physics in an easy, fast and enjoyable way.
Personal Life
Luca married Sophia Syrotkina on 13 April 2019, after their engagement on 31 January 2019 in Santiago, Chile.
After finishing his bachelor’s in physics, Luca moved to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he lived for three years and completed his masters degree. During the last months of his masters, on 24 February 2022, when Russian troops invaded Ukraine, Luca and Sophia were forced to move out of the country, crossing the border over to Hungary on foot. After receiving aid from relatives the couple moved to Chicago, where they lived with family and friends while Luca applied to various Italian Universities to begin his PhD. By the second half of 2022 he chose to start his degree in mathematical analysis. After a few months, he dropped out to pursue his entrepreneurial dream of starting his own online community of mathematical and theoretical physics students, independent researchers and mathematics enthusiasts from around the world.
Luca and Sophia speak four languages: English, Russian, Portuguese and Italian.
Scientific Outreach
Luca and Sophia Di Beo have been working on simplifying advanced mathematical topics through their Youtube channel titled “DiBeos”.
The DiBeos channel is oriented around mathematics and theoretical physics, and aims to simplify complex concepts within the subjects. Beyond the videos, Luca writes weekly PDF files which accompany each video in order to add explanations and calculations.
The platform dibeos.net receives papers from independent mathematics and physics researchers from around the world, and gives researchers or simple math enthusiasts the opportunity to share their discoveries for free on the public platform that does not require extensive checks and relies on public ‘up-votes’ and ‘down-votes’. The DiBeos mission is to simplify mathematical complex concepts, in order to provide a fast, thorough, and enjoyable learning experience.
